WATER LILLY
Textile Art
2025
Concept Note: Water Lilly Pond
This body of work developed during my four-month residency at Space Studio, Baroda in 2025. The time and space allowed me to closely observe my surroundings and slowly build my ideas into material form.
A water lily pond near the studio became an important source of inspiration. I spent time watching how the lilies float, gather, and spread across the surface of the water. Their forms are soft yet dense, sometimes clustered and sometimes open, constantly shifting with movement in the water. Beneath the surface, there is another hidden world layers of stems, roots, and organic growth that are not immediately visible.
These observations influenced the way I approached form, texture, and structure in my work. The surface of my pieces reflects the clustered and repetitive patterns of the lily leaves, while the hanging extensions suggest what exists below the water submerged, flowing, and slightly uncontrolled. The work tries to capture both the visible and invisible aspects of the pond.
While working with textile industrial waste, especially felt material, I was drawn to its soft, tactile quality. It allowed me to build dense, growing surfaces that feel organic and alive. The material naturally formed textures that reminded me of underwater growth, corals, and plant-like structures.
Through this work, I explore how natural ecosystems can be translated into textile forms creating a connection between water, growth, and material. The pieces exist as quiet reflections of the pond, where stillness and movement, surface and depth, come together.
